Born in Te Anau, Paul had a wonderful childhood exploring nature and having adventures. His earliest artistic memories are of painting purple trees, an influence that is still present today. In 1991 in Paul's last year of BSc Hons Physics, he started painting with acrylic in order to express his feelings, and non-academic and non scientific ideas. These initial abstract works were busy and colourful, and expressed a multitude of ideas. Wanting to explore painting in more detail, Paul attended night classes (whilst doing his Masters in Medical Physics) and realising that more formal painting styles were also interesting, he began painting buildings. Flowers followed. For several years following there was a flurry of showings and solo exhibitions. However, art was always second place to Paul's vocation, and he spend eight years doing innovative Data Visualisation for an international IT company. This work was so consuming there was little room for art, and finally this imbalance within Paul caused him to take leave and commence BFA at Otago Polytech in 2006. Currently art and science hold a much more balanced place in Paul's life. He still works with Data Visualisation, but only 3 days a week. This leaves him space to be fully focused on his artistic practice and he as added sculpture to his many actives (soon to be displayed on website). Happy Days :) |
